Most traditional bathtubs and showers are made from acrylic polymers. In fact, several solid surface bathtubs are made from acrylic polymers as well. But that is where the similarities end. Traditional bathtubs and showers are made from layers of different building materials. The top upper layer is made from 3-4mm of Polymeric Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA), often referred to as acrylic glass. This is the layer that is visible. Underneath this top layer is reinforced fiberglass back bonded by polyester resin. The fiberglass back strengthens the tub/ shower. Some people call acrylic bathtubs fiberglass bathtubs because of the way it is constructed.

Solid surface bathtubs are made by a completely different process. Acrylic polymers can be used, however, in most cases, manufacturers will choose to use a resin that has more of a natural appearance. Unlike traditional tubs, a solid surface bathtub is not made from layers of materials. Instead, the resin is heated, melted, blended together, and then poured into a mold. The result is an extremely strong bathtub that is made from one solid piece of material.
